Renaissance Wax TM

We now carry the best wax that can be used on your turned wood projects.  Renaissance Wax has a crystalline structure much finer than totally natural waxes, a property that confers a highly efficient moisture resistance.  When thinly applied and rubbed out to full luster, the wax film is and remains glass clear with no discoloration to either the wax or the underlying surface.  Renaissance Wax is free from acids (pH neutral) and will not damage even sensitive materials.  No matter how often the wax is used there is no loss of clarity so that fine surface detail is never obscured.

We offer three different size containers: 1/2 ounce is $4.50, 2.25 ounce (65ML) is $15.00 and the 7oz (200ML) is $25.00.  The 1/2 ounce size contains enough wax for 100 or more pens.  To use: Using a soft clean cloth pad, simply apply a thin coat to the entire pen (metal & all), wait 15 seconds and then wipe off using a soft clean cloth.  Detailed instruction are included with each type container.  You do NOT need to power buff this wax - simply wipe on and wipe off!

Renaissance Wax can also be used on other turned wood projects, knives, tools and a host of other things.  This stuff is great!!!  I am so confident that you will like this product that if you're not satisfied please return it and I will refund your money (less shipping).

Micro-Mesh TM

Micro-Mesh is a unique cushioned abrasive that will produce a very fine and uniform scratch pattern.  The 12,000 grit will leave a scratch pattern that cannot be seen by the human eye.  Micro-Mesh abrasives can polish to a highly reflective state or to a matte or satin finish depending where you stop while using the different grits.  MM is THE choice of abrasive for sanding and polishing stabilized wood after your paper sanding.

We carry individual sheets (3" x 6") ranging in grit from 1500 through 12000 that sell for $1.99 per sheet.  We also have a package of seven different grits ranging from 2400 through 12000 that is priced at $12.99.  Micro-Mesh can be used wet or dry and it can be washed and reused.

Micro-GlossTM Liquid Abrasive

Made by the same company that manufactures Micro-Mesh, Micro-Gloss is formulated to remove, not hide, superficial scratches and light surface damage.  A general purpose water-based liquid that uses a 1 micron abrasive crystal. An excellent compound for use on acrylics!  Comes in an 8oz bottle with dispenser. $8.95.  Click Here to order.

Special note:  This compound is meant to be used with a buffing wheel.  We strongly recommend that you have one dedicated buffing wheel for Micro-Gloss.  You do not want any other buffing compound to come in contact with the wheel used for Micro-Gloss.  When not using the dedicated Micro-Gloss buffing wheel store in a plastic zip-lock bag to keep it clean.

Extra-Fine Sandpaper

We now carry finer grits of sandpaper than what you might be able to find locally.  Our sandpaper  is manufactured in Germany, is the stearate aluminum oxide variety and is very high quality.  It is a light gray in color and it will not stain lighter colored wood (as the automotive wet/dry black papers can).  We have three different grits as shown below:

Available Grits (PS33W European Grade) Price per 9" x 11" sheet
P800 Grit $0.55
P1200 Grit $0.55
P1500 Grit $0.55

ABRALON

Churchill and Sedona pens made with 30,000 year old blue mastodon tusk and finished using Abralon  pads
(I have been assured that no mastodons were killed to make these pens)

Obtain a scratch free remarkable shine on all stabilized woods in "One Minute", using the new foam backed ABRALON sanding pads.  Kit contains instructions for use and four sanding pads ranging from 500 to 4,000 grit.

The "One Minute" Finishing Kit using  ABRALON  Sanding Pads

"Sta burl ized" Wood Finishing Guideline Steps - Sand your Stabilized material as you normally would to 180 or 220 grit.  Using the 500 grit ABRALON  sanding pad with your lathe speed set at approximately 1000 RPM, start sanding going back and forth over the entire pen blank with slight pressure for approximately 10-15 seconds.  Wipe off the pen blank with a clean rag to remove any residual dust that might be left on your pen blank and then proceed to the 1000 grit ABRALON pad for another 10-15 seconds; wipe off blank and then proceed using the 2000 and 4000 ABRALON sanding pads as you have just accomplished.  When sanding is completed, use the finish of your choice.

Exotic & Domestic Wood Finishing Guideline Steps - Sand your wooden material as you normally would to 180 or 220 grit.  Start by using the 500 grit ABRALON sanding pad with your lathe speed set at approximately 1000 RPM and with slight pressure sand your material until entire area has been sanded.  Wipe off the material with a clean rag to remove any residual dust that might be left on the material and then proceed to the 1000 grit ABRALON pad; wipe off material and then proceed using the 2000 and 4000 ABRALON sanding pads as you have just accomplished.  When sanding is completed, use the finish of your choice.

Helpful Hints:

  • After each grit sanding pad, make certain to wipe away any sanding debris with a soft cloth prior to continuing on with the next step to avoid contamination scratches.

  • Light pressure should be used to control the sanding pad. Do not push hard with the pad – it might put scratches into your work.  A light touch is needed.

  • Remove the sanding pad from the surface of the material prior to turning the lathe off.

  • To increase the life of your pads, flick them with your finger or use compressed air and remove the dust from the pads.   You can even soak them in water to remove any debris.

Trouble Shooting:

Swirl Marks or Scratches In The Finish: Do not skip steps. Spend approximately the same amount of time using each sanding pad. Be sure too completely remove the sanding residue after each sanding pad before moving onto the next step.  If you do not remove the residue, it may cause some of your scratches! Lathe speed should be approximately 1000 - 1500 rpm. Do not use on extreme high speeds.

*Please Note: Not everyone's idea of a particular finish is the same. Fewer or more steps may be required in order to achieve the look you desire. It is a good idea to check the finish between each sanding pad until you satisfied with your finish.

Kit price: $12.95

 Tenon Cutting Tool

A lot of pen turners, for one reason or another, just hate cutting a tenon that is required for the installation of a centerband on some pen kits.  Arizona Silhouette Inc. to the rescue!  Here is a handy little tool that makes cutting a tenon a breeze!  I demonstrate how easy it is to use in my video.  I also have used a tool like this to cut a groove in pen blanks as well into bowls (see below) to add a band of crushed stone as an embellishment.

The cutting portion of the tool is made from 1/8" x 1/8" High Speed Steel (HSS), the ferrule is solid brass and the handle is turned from Delrin.  You will find multiple uses for this tool and it will quickly become one of your favorites.

Cost is $16.95.  To order the Tenon Cutting Tool Click Here

Chamfering Tool

This handy little tool removes the hard 90 degree edge found inside the pen tubes and is used prior to assembly.  Once you are at the point of assembly you take the pointed end of this tool, insert it into each end of each pen tube and twist - the cutting edges will bevel the edges of the tubes.  The beveled edge aids in assembly and guides the tip, transmission, end caps as well as the upper barrel onto the lower barrel (transmission) without having to worry about galling or shaving the plating from the parts.  I demonstrate how simple this tool is to use in my video.

The outside of the pen tubes can also be chamfered.  In the event you experience a 'blown' blank the tube can be salvaged by trimming off the remaining  wood and glue.  In most cases a small ridge if brass will be found on each end of the tube which is a result of the cutting action caused by your pen mill.  Insert the tube into the three-legged end of the chamfering tool, twist and the ridge is gone.

This tool is made of hardened steel and it will last you a lifetime.  I personally have one of these tools and it has chamfered well over 10,000 pieces of rifle and pistol brass cases over the past thirty years.  Once you try it I know that it will become an absolute necessity in your pen tool inventory.  The chamfering toll sells for $15.95.  Click Here to order.

Tube Insertion Tool for Large Pen Kits

Ever used a regular size pen tube insertion tool on the cigar, El Grande, El Presidente or larger pens?  In most cases the end of the normal insertion tool will push out the plug on the other end of the tube used to keep glue out.  This tool was designed for the larger kits so that the plugs won't be pushed out.  It even works on the little short tube of the El Toro fountain pen!

Constructed from Type 303 stainless steel this instrument will last a lifetime.  A 1/4"-20 thread shaft is provided so that you can create and install your own handle.  The cost of this handy tool is $11.95.   To Order Click Here

We also offer the insertion tool complete with a Delrin handle at $15.95

Universal Tube Insertion Tool for Pen Kits

We now offer the same type of tool that fits all tube sizes.  It is also constructed of Type 303 stainless steel, has a 1/4" x 20 threaded shaft and uses the same Delrin handle.

Universal Tube Insertion Tool  $10.95

Universal Tube Insertion Tool with Delrin Handle  $ 15.95

Buffing Compounds

Polishing stabilized stabilized pen blanks to a high gloss, even after the use of extremely fine abrasives, is possible by first using Tripoli and then using the White Diamond buffing compounds. These compounds contain extremely fine abrasive that are designed to remove any light scratches produced by paper and/or cloth abrasives. The Tripoli bar is priced at $4.50 and the White Diamond is priced at $4.50. Each bar will polish thousand's of pens as very little of this material is needed on your buffing wheels.

You will need two separate buffing wheels for the process to work successfully as you do not want to use the same wheel for both compounds.

To Order Tripoli Buffing Compound Click Here

To Order White Diamond Buffing Compound Click Here

If you sand out to 12,000 Micro-Mesh you will only need the White Diamond compound.
