A personal note:  Ray was a friend of mine and I had the good fortune to gain most of my woodturning skills under his tutelage.  He was a tough teacher but I never regretted one of his 'posterior weight loss'  critiques.

This book will show you what it takes to attain the title of Master Woodturner.
Woodturning With Ray Allen by Dale Nish

Gain Inspiration from the Work of a Great American Woodturner.  The ultimate guide for anyone interested in segmented turning, Woodturning with Ray Allen provides a thorough look at the specific techniques and beautiful work of Ray Allen.  Written by one of the most respected  teachers of woodturning in the United States.

Allen (1930-2000) directed his full attention to segmented woodturning in 1988, after retiring from the construction business. He quickly became one of the nation's best segmented turners, exhibiting in galleries and museums nationwide and winning a number of awards. Allen spent his retirement in Arizona and drew much inspiration from Southwest Indian designs and forms.

Within these chapters you will find everything you need to know about Allen, segmented woodturning, and how to create your own beautiful pieces:

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT: Full-color photographs and illustrations will help you understand the resources that Allen used to produce his bowls

DRAWING BLUEPRINTS: Provides crucial information about segment formulas, veneers, materials, adhesives and abrasives to help you plan your piece

TURNING A SEGMENTED BOWL: Allen's detailed turning process is fully detailed in this how-to section, which includes photographs and instructions for each of its 95 steps

GALLERY: Generate ideas for your own pieces from this chapter filled with color photographs of Allen's work

BOWL PLANS and DESIGN SEGMENTS: Illustrates how to recreate Allen's styles and designs yourself

One-piece #1 MT and #2 MT Bottle Stopper Mandrels

#1 MT Bottle Stopper Mandrel (top)          #2MT Bottle Stopper Mandrel (bottom)

We now offer two bottle stopper mandrels manufactured from one solid piece of 304 stainless steel.  These mandrels will work on all of the bottle stoppers we carry that have a 3/8"-16 threads (BHW-465, -466, -467, -468, -469 and the -470 series stoppers).  You do not need a 3 jawed chuck or a Jacobs chuck to utilize these new mandrels.

These mandrels are made with a Number 1 and a Number 2 Morse taper and both have 3/8"-16 threads.  Each mandrel also has a 1/4"-20 threaded hole in the tail to allow for the use of a drawbar.  Here is a short video produced by Ed Davidson on how to make and use a drawbar:  Morse Taper Bottle Stopper Mandrels .

These mandrels utilize the two different sizing bushings that are used for the BHW-465, -466, -467, -468, -469 series stoppers as well as the smaller BHW-470 mini-stoppers.  Each mandrel is sold separately and you will need to order the correct sizing bushing for the bottle stopper you wish to make.  Order both size sizing bushings and you are all set.

We recommend that you use the 3/8"-16 Norseman Bottom Tap $3.95 as well as the 5/16" Norseman Drill Bit $4.49 to make it easier to mount the material used for the bottle stopper handle onto the mandrels.
